How to Avoid These 3 Common Car Accidents

Car accidents sometimes happen and even a small incident can cause personal injuries, costly repairs, cause insurance premiums to go up, or require you to seek legal help. While there’s no way to completely avoid car accidents, there are some strategies that will help you avoid these three common car accidents.

  1. Rear-end Collisions

Rear-end collisions are some of the most common car accidents. However, despite their frequency, these collisions can often be avoided by implementing the following strategies:

  • Keeping your distance: You’ll want to drive far enough behind the car in front of you to prevent any unnecessary damage. This is especially true when there’s bad weather or you’re in a spot that calls for frequent stoppings, such as a traffic jam or a construction site.
  • Don’t become distracted: Oftentimes these collisions only take a couple of seconds to happen. Taking your eyes off the road for a moment can result in a collision.
  • Be strategic: Sometimes a car in front of you might be moving too slow. In other cases, a car behind you might want to move too fast–even if you’re currently driving the speed limit. In the former case, wait until you’re able to appropriately pass the car or make a quick turn to avoid the vehicle altogether. In the latter case, unless you’re a NASCAR driver, there’s no shame in letting another vehicle pass you.

Parked Car Damages

Car accidents can happen anywhere, even when you’re parked. Unfortunately, even if you’re a skillful driver who’s always able to park within the lines and back out properly without any issues, the same can’t be said for other drivers. To avoid these issues some tips are:

  • Don’t park in the busiest part of a parking lot
  • Use a garage whenever possible
  • Maximize space by repositioning your car if you need to
  • Try not to park on a busy street or by driveways, intersections, or tight turns

Single-Vehicle Accidents

A single-vehicle accident might include a collision with other vehicles, animals, debris, road barriers, etc. While the first two accidents often result in only minor damages, a single-vehicle accident can range anywhere from a scratched bumper all the way up to your car becoming totaled. There are some strategies, however, that you can implement:

  • Don’t drive during bad weather: Even a little bit of rain can make road conditions unfavorable. Ultimately, it’s best to not drive during bad weather. If you absolutely need to get somewhere, consider alternative means of transportation.
  • Always follow the rules of the road: Just about everyone is guilty of not following the rules of the road at some point–speeding for example. Regardless of the situation, however, you should always follow the rules of the road.
  • Be prepared if an accident does happen: Finally, you’ll want to be prepared if an accident does happen. Understand that you should always seek medical attention and contact a car accident lawyer. Our friends at Therman Law Offices, LTD has a team of attorneys ready to assist.
